Seniority Announcements - January 2013

This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.

So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.

Lit Competition #14 - "The Magic of Memories"
I just read through my past journals and it seems this is my 14th lit competition here on DA, and my 17th competition overall, which is jolly! I have obviously been gone a long time so I wanted to meet people from the lit community and get involved again so this seemed like a good idea, plus obviously its almost Christmas so why the hell not!
The Theme
This year I asked my 7 closest friends to write their favourite memory from 2012 on a piece of paper about each of the other 7 (including me). They will all go into envelopes and on New Years Eve each person will get an envelope with these letters from the other 7 people about them. This is a great way to remind you of how far you have come in the past year, remember the best days and nights of that year, to feel loved, and it provides a permanent reminder that you can go back to in twenty years and remember this year. I don't know where that quote comes from; I found it one day and saved it in a document years back. I did find Dr. Seuss' "You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." which is similar enough to suggest that the former comes from the latter, in a sense.
Either way, I have fallen in love with *Kamal-Q and we are now engaged to be married.
It's a bit funny because, before *Kamal-Q, I didn't think I could love anybody or that anybody could love me... and I accepted that. I made my peace with it. I'm loving jars this month. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I saw some set up at a craft fair that I had a table at, and I just fell in love with them. A couple of large jars with some fairy lights nestled in them - the effect was immense. It was so simple too! Sadly the people weren't actually selling the lights, but once I'd made a little profit on my sales, I went over clutching my ten pound note and picked out a few. So I was delighted to see that on Flipboard today, there was an article exploring 19 great photos of jars. If you're stuck for inspiration, grab a jam jar (take the jam out first maybe) and start shooting. Shoot things through them, around them, in them - get creative! Jars are awesome.

I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

We've made some changes to the way literature and Journals display on deviantART. In order to provide a more unified experience, we've updated the format of literature deviations and Journals to better display your text, as well as to optimize the reading experience for your readers!
In addition to the updated background, we've made sure that familiar tools for readers have been retained with the new layout. Readers can change the background from light to dark, enlarge the text, and more, using the buttons presented at the to

PE: Stock, Resources and deviantART RelatedStock & Resources
I see Stock & Resources as a category of art on deviantART where the entire focus is on helping others and providing them with what they need. This helps artists of any medium! Photomanipulators for example rely heavily on the stock photos they find here. If you draw or paint, digitally or traditionally, many stock photos can be hugely helpful as reference, as can line art and textures. There's literature templates, fonts, fractal and vector resources, designs & patterns for artisans and crafters.. and then there's tutorials for any kind of art, and about deviantART itself.
So one great way to contribute something to the community and your fellow artists is to provide such resources!
We will not go into this in depth as it has its own Community Volunteers and Project Educate weeks that should help you get started!

A Note on Daily Deviation FeaturesAt ten features into my tenure as Community Volunteer for Abstract & Surreal Photography I am noticing a certain trend in response to abstract and surreal Daily Deviations. I shall address some of the recurring themes here, and hopefully answer some questions along the way. At this point I would like to mention that I am talking about a small and vocal minority, and I sincerely thank the overwhelming majority for supporting the featured artists and their work. You're what makes this site such a great community.
With that said, let's get to the troublesome themes I am coming across.
The "This is crap!" Argument
As an observer and a critic, you're entitled to think that something isn't very good. However, exclaiming as such on the comments of a piece of work that an artist has spent time and energy creating is not only counter-productive, but rude and insulting, especially if it's not followed up with some advice about how you think they could make their

Semi-absence 24-03-13: I'm very sorry to have left you without responses to your notes/messages etc. but right now I can't keep up with it anymore. Real life really got me down this time. The worst should be over by next friday. I look forward to being able to reply and to write again!
Obligatory journal update to announce my semi-absence.

This semester turned out to be a lot tougher than I'd hoped, so I'll be slow in my replies. You're probably all sick of me explaining myself every time, but I don't want anyone to feel like I'm ignoring them on purpose!
That's basically all I have to say, except that I really should stop staying up till 2 a.m. writing stupid journals.

EOMWhich stands for End Of Month. And there were things happening, which is more than good.
First of all, there was a quite steady influx of poems, and from many people; and it's a reliable indicator. We're absolutely alive. We also had a neat discussion that, in fact, exceeded my expectations, and made me learn more about DA.
Since a new month of February is upon us, an appropriate folder was created. Submit away. Also, the poems in the January folder were copied to the thematic folders, and while doing it, I noticed how inadequate the current thematic division is.
Since, where would you place a poem referencing "The Road Not Taken", only about a truck driver with a crisis in his personal life? "Unrequited love"? "Romantic poetry"? "Stories and life's prose"?
Or a translation from Japanese of a poem about a love between a human and a fallen angel? In this case, I evaded choice by putting it in "Non-english poetry".
So, I guess there's something profoundly wrong with the folder structure

Of Awesome Things

To start with the most exciting news!

Internship

Tomorrow will NOT be the last day of my internship at deviantART. I have been offered an extension of two months so I'll keep working for $Heidi, $Ayame-Kenoshi and other lovely people to serve this community

My end date has been moved to the end of March, when we'll be evaluating again. I am thrilled to stay around on the team and to keep working in this fashion for the community that's dear to my heart

Holiday

I'd also like to thank everyone that sent me cards or even gifts over the holiday period! I received around 30 Christmas/New Years cards (about as many as I sent myself), along with two deviantART Keychains, a Llama Keychain and even a lovely print that was on my wishlist
