A new era is about to start

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 20, 2012, 5:16 PM
Or that's what the Maya said. According to most scientists, the 21st would be the first day of their new calendar cycle.

Does this inherently mean a new era? Perhaps not. But our future is in our own hands. Why not try?

Why not use this as an opportunity to start working towards a new time - towards a better world? Sure, none of us have the power to change the entire world as they please, and I have no illusions that those who do, will be reading this journal (if anyone has such power at all). But why not choose to do something within your and anyone's power, to make the world a little better for at least some of us? Or to make the future a little bit brighter for us all?

Some suggestions

Meditate. Small, simple. Meditating is known to have great positive effects on you personally. This will also reflect on others around you.

Donate. Even if you're not rich, there's a way to donate for almost anyone. Find a charity you believe in and donate in a way that works for you. Donate money directly, donate a small amount of money on a monthly basis, or add the charity to your will. There are also small and new charities around that need material donations such as office supplies and other things you may just happen to have lying around or stored away somewhere.

Charity suggestion: The Black Fish. What they do: By investigating, educating and taking non-violent direct action, we campaign to end illegal and destructive fishing practices, and safeguard a future for the plentiful species in our seas.source

Volunteer. For a charity, or a hospital - but there are endless other places in need of help. Some sites that help you find a place to volunteer, by location: UK, USA, Australia, anywhere.

Raise awareness. You don't need money for this; you can do this online, or at a popular public spot with a bit of creativity. Here's some lists of ideas (that I believe could be applied to many other fields than just those mentioned): www.livethemagicofafrica.com/4… compassioninpolitics.wordpress… theovernight.donordrive.com/in… assets.filemobile.com/15/get-i…

Change your life or rather, some minor detail in it. Look at your life and habits critically and I'm sure you'll find things you could be doing in a more eco- or human-friendly way.

Thank you so much for reading :thanks: I'm not asking you to change your life overnight - but I'd love you to at least think about this question and maybe do something with it:

What is your contribution to the rest of the world?

Answer this for yourself - it's important that you think about it, not that you tell me. That said I'd also love to hear your ideas to add to the list above :aww:

Planting trees is what I'd like to do more this year.
Oh and recycling, people don't do that here in India. :stare:

only volunteered in i guess quite a few places (most having to do with helping animals and such) and mostly the reason for it was because of school. i do love animals though, so i enjoyed it, and plus i helped out in ways that didn't need to be used for community service in school. i also think i spread the word about some things, but otherwise i haven't done too much to help in the world. i think i plan to some more in the future, though.

I love this Journal. It's succinct, to the point, and bears a message and some info I couldn't agree more with! Thank You for writing this. It's something a great many people need to read and consider, at least somewhat.

My contribution to this planet is to stab zombies in the head with a rusty ass screwdriver then hearing the lamentation of the woman.

I love this journal and highly recommend volunteering. I got involved with a local arts charity a few years ago as a performer and fell in love with it so much that I'm now on the board of directors. We put on amazing huge public performances twice a year to mark important dates in the Celtic calendar and have year-round activities for our members to take part in, from skill sharing workshops to outreach to doing volunteer work in the local arts community. It's a lot of work but it's incredibly rewarding and I've met a really amazing bunch of people through my work there. If anyone out there has an opportunity to volunteer, I say GO FOR IT! It will change your life and you'll never look back :)

I think this day is pretty much about making people think and try to remember who they really are and what they truly stand for. :) Like Christmas reminds families to finally get together! :B Not to pulverize the human race in some biblically misunderstood way. Even though we Have the choice to end our species in a number of cruel ways, I no longer believe such outcomes will be allowed to take place.

I've never really talked online about human empowerment in my life before, given that so far it's only been a thing I do among the "real-life" (simply meaning offline) people I trust or am inclined towards trusting. But no longer than two days ago I had a sudden spark of inspiration to create an artwork dedicated to this day ... and things went unbelievably smooth (because creating art is usually a war zone on my side ), as if that's how they were meant to be! I still had a choice to ignore my idea, but I chose to opposite. So I took advantage of this on-topic work to also write a proper description and ended up with what you can see here. Even though what I wrote barely even scratches the surface of the topic, I believe it could serve as a little motivational push for some people. :)

Like you asked, "does this inherently mean a new era?" ... and I agree - probably not. But we Have the chance to start it so let's do it! :la: :D

12/21 is the Winter Solstice and I plan to donate these things: Prayer of a spiritual nature with a family/group I know who holds a prayer meeting all night long every Solstice (folks indigenous to the US). They're in another US state, but they know I stay up all night with them.

I also donate regularly to Doctors Without Borders, a group I like very much, and The World Wildlife Fund.

There are people even in my small town who are homeless.
For them and my neighbors-> I give a friendly smile and a "Good day" that can change a lot for many.

I like to visit the Senior Center, too.
They tell wonderful stories and all they want are younger folks to listen to and appreciate them.

There's so much to do it staggers the imagination, but much can be done all year 'round, like recycling.

Thanks, $namenotrequired for bringing this to our attention.

(It's good to read everyone's answers for more ideas.)

That's another great thing that I didn't mention but that's important too - to smile to people. I do that a lot, I always smile when I don't have a reason not to :D it's also important to say nice things as you think them. ^^

Thank you so much
