Five basic tips to get your Art some Attention, Appreciation & Audience on deviantART

Here's some tips that may not get you a consistent spot on the front page right away, but that will definitely help getting some watchers and friends, whether you already have some, or not.

First, let me make clear that this is only about 'good' attention – if you just want, say, a certain pageview count, there are probably better ways.

This article is for those who would like some people to take them serious as an artist and to actively watch them.

Also note that you needn't follow all of the tips below, but it's recommendable to follow at least 3 of them. Just one or two will not usually get you very far.

So here we go!

Submit art regularly.
Try to find a balance between quality and quantity. Personally I think it's best to submit one or a couple of deviations a week, but only if you have something to upload that you like and find worthy (otherwise keep it to scraps). Try to keep the flow fairly consistent (rather than submitting all at once and then nothing for a month).

Improve.
Your art will interest people a lot more when your work gets better! If you struggle with this, there are a lot of tutorials and other articles that can help you with this; some of those you can find in my recent article here: [link] .

Present yourself professionally
Who will take you seriously if you don't? Luckily it's quite easy to show that you do. The first step would be to go to your own page and see what it looks like – are there any empty or unused widgets? Simply remove them, or make use of them! Perhaps look into the other widgets you can add as well; add them and use them, or don't add them at all.
Getting an icon, and a lit author tag (if you have any literature), helps too. You can set them in your settings; you can find many free-to-use icons on #Free-dAvatars for example.
Of course, if you want to be taken seriously, you'll also have to present yourself in a mature way when interacting with other people; using acceptable grammar, spelling, and of course manners is recommendable if not necessary.
And don't forget to reply to the comments you get (and perhaps to thank people for faving or watching too). People are a lot more likely to remember you and do it again, and others that see it are more likely to comment etc. too.

Go to the Forum
The +forum is one nice place where you can meet people. Though not everything in there is always to be taken seriously Good forums to meet friends or fans are:
- The Welcome Center is recommended for new deviants to post or those who hardly know anyone. Best is to both comment on other threads, and create your own.
- The Thumbshare forum (and for premium members, Premium Thumbshare) has many threads where you can share your thumbs for all sorts of occasions – for example to be watched, critiqued or featured.

Perhaps the most important of all: browse art and comment on it. If you give useful comments, people are likely to appreciate it, and to be interested in you as well.
A couple of places to do so are:
- The front page (+www), which I recommend you set to newest. The popular deviations usually get too many comments already for your comment to be noticed. (Be aware though that all types of art from all categories may come up - using mature content filter is recommended.)
- +Groups are great for browsing art as well as submitting your own. Make sure you keep a healthy balance between the two. Submitting to groups without participating in them in any other way will quickly get you a negative reputation.
- Discovery is a nice tool to find art you like. It always displays the watcher count of the artist too – the lower this count, the higher the chance this person will appreciate your comments.

1. To buy points you need a deviantART account. Log in to yours or create one as below.
B) Buy Points
1. Go with the mouse over Shop in the top bar and select points.
2. On the Points page, click "+Points" on the amount of points you want.

You can choose a combination of different amounts. Want to buy $45 worth of points? Choose '2,000' once and '800' twice.

If you want to remove something you added, click the grey "-" next to the green "+Points".

You can change the currency in your settings.
3. When you're done, hit the yellow "Checkout" button to go to the checkout page. The first step is to review your order. If everything's ok, hit 'Continue'.

I made a set of wings
Crushed emerald
Shimmering brightly
Woven into the finest white silk
Edges firm with golden threads
And silvery seams.

Perpetuality is a game I help create where your ultimate goal as a player is to make the entire world run on renewable energy resources. In a fun game-like setting, we want to educate people about the many factors involved in this issue and help the world find crowdsourced solutions.

It was founded during the NASA Space Apps Challenge where we won the first national place. But it's early stage yet! We want to keep developing it and work towards our goals of making the world better. So please support us in the international competition! Interning at deviantART

Highlights after 6 months

Today, it's exactly 6 months since Heidi and Toby invited me to work with them! I'd like to look back at some of the highlights of this time The tl;dr is that it's been fantastic. ~ $namenotrequired

The best parts

I never had to ask for it or apply. I was personally invited the first time, and I was asked to keep it up each time my contract ran out.
It's a paid position, and I can work from home (i.e. wherever and whenever suits me), both pretty rare traits of internships.
Okay, just kidding. Those are pretty nice, but they weren't really the best parts. The best part is what I get to do and for whom!

My role

So what do I do exactly? Well... Do you have a minute?

I'm blessed with a position that is too diverse to be summarised in a few words.

I'm a Marketing Intern. Some recurring themes and tasks I work on are our social media accounts, data mining, general internet research and promoting £deviantARTGear products. For a lot of our many cool projects and contests, I've helped by answering questions and distributing prizes, but also sometimes picking winners or checking if entries qualified. Sometimes I am asked questions about the community, and a couple of times I've had to ring the alarm bell when things went wrong.

But unsurprisingly for those who know me well, some of my very favourite projects are related to testing new features, doing some research around the site, and thinking of new ideas; helping to make the website itself better.

In other words...

In case anything in that description confused you, here's the best bits.

Browse and find awesome art. (Yes, they pay me for this!)
Help organise those awesome contests, projects and giveaways.
Help make the website better.

That may sound very exciting, and believe me, it is

however I'm still just an intern - a word with rather unflattering urbandictionary definitions. (Sorry Hunter, I'm a little too far from Los Angeles to bring around coffee!

)

And once in a blue moon, I do find myself spending an hour or two copying and pasting info into spreadsheets or clicking hundreds of links to find a specific name. This never bores me however, because everything I do is meaningful and I'm doing it all for the community I love.

(Yet, Heidi and Toby always apologise when they ask me to do less glamorous jobs, which is sweet.

)

Some good memories

The enthusiasm from many other staff members when they first heard that I was joining them.

That moment when Toby discovered that I am, in fact, a robot.

April 1st; the day of deviantHEART. I did quite some work for this and Ellen and I also chose a picture of us to be used for it together. We did not write the testimonial ourselves (we also didn't meet through a dating service) but it's pretty crazy when your face is on a site with so many visitors and that generates significant press too. People around the site still recognise me from this sometimes.

Quote from Toby: "Hey Bart. I have a weird project for you. It requires having multiple personality disorder."

Those times I could pick winners for contests.

A few days after I had started, my symbol was flipped and I got my privileges that I'd be needing for the job. I first noticed this because I was suddenly seeing ads again! Despite our eternal Premium Memberships, we all browse with ads enabled to help catch bad ones - with the result that I spent that precious first moment with a dollar sign wondering how I was suddenly logged out.

That one time when I met many of my current 'colleagues', before I knew I'd one day be working with them.

The sweet words I often get from people I've helped.

But perhaps my favourite thing I want to remember when I'm grey and old (

) is that I was chosen to be invited for this position out of over 20 million members to be the one to help make my favourite website and community better.

I'm Bart, 21, from the Netherlands. I study Informatics at the University of Amsterdam and work for deviantART as Marketing Intern.

My passions are helping people, and the deviantART community. I love combining the two. You'll find me in #help often. I also love `Gwendolyn12, my girlfriend who I met on deviantART a few years ago (left in the above picture).

My role as deviantART intern includes assisting with our Social Media accounts, data mining, promoting products, general internet research and testing new features. I often help with the many awesome projects they have going. For instance, I've helped with Holiday Card Project, Creative Grants and Train Your Brain with *theartdepartment. Examples of tasks for these are distributing prizes and answering people's questions. I'm also asked questions based on my dA community expertise.

Note, I'm not just staff here. I am also still a member of the Community Relations team, and as said I'm also just a guy who loves the deviantART community.

I know that sounds obvious - indeed, that's why I work here in the first place. But realise that this means that much of what I do here is not strictly part of my job.

Why my premium membership suddenly disappeared? I am still have premium for 24 months, till 2015. But suddenly the sign beside my name turned into ~ and my message box full with adds bars, but in the premium status on my profile, it's still said I have 24 months, what happened? Please heeeeeeelp, I've contacted the help desk but still has no response QAQ

You see, me good friend !FlashiePaws was banned yesterday afternoon. I know her IRL, and she texted me saying THIS is what appeared on her profile. "You have been indefinitely banned from deviantART with a reason of ban evasion for currently underage member, !Secretpeeeps." !Secretpeeeps is NOT !FlashiePaws , Okay? :desecretpeeeps: Is someone who stole her art and trolled her. But that is in the past, and !Secretpeeeps Deactivated MONTHS ago. I have no idea why !FlashiePaws is being banned NOW. If you could PLEASE help me out with this problem, that'd be great. I just really need to know that everything is going to be fine! D:
